MY SHOCKING, INSPIRING AND PROFITABLE BUSINESS TRIP TO LAGOS, NIGERIA!
It was my first trip to Africa and I was invited to be a guest speaker at the first Asia International Business Opportunities Seminar on October 15, 2007, held at Sheraton Hotels & Towers Ikeja, Lagos. This seminar was organized by Softflex Singapore Pte Ltd and Softflex Nigeria Ltd. My successful, innovative and positive friend, Mr Rasheed, committed lots of time, money and effort to make this event a reality!
Why my first trip to Nigeria was shocking? I was shocked by the way people are risking life and limbs to earn a living selling products in heavy traffic on the road! Whenever our car slows down in a traffic jam we will find many people coming to our car windows offering all kinds of products! They will come to my car windows to sell newspapers, books, foods, candy, drinks, handkerchiefs, shoes, slippers, bags, etc. It was very obvious to me that these people are doing it for survival and it is one of the ways they know of making an honest living!
I was inspired because the people are willing to work hard and even risk their lives moving from car to car to sell their goods instead of whining and complaining! Another shocking and inspiring fact is the estimated population of Nigeria of over 140 million people! This creates a huge opportunity for marketers who are able to identify niches and have the courage to come to Nigeria to do business and to make a positive difference to the lives of millions of people here!
It is not only what you know it is also who you know that will ensure your success. I also learned a lot from the speech by Professor Eghosa Osagie, a professional economist and author of "The New Nigerian Economy - From Poverty to Prosperity" which is a "blueprint" for the prosperity of Nigeria! I highly recommend every Nigerian or people who have an interest on improving the Nigerian economy, to read this book!
Trade commissions, embassies and banks were invited to this important event and I look forward to the second international event to be held in Singapore in 2008 and followed by the third event in Lagos, Nigeria again.
I was also inspired by Prof. Dora Akunyili, the Director-General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). She is one of the nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize Award. I admire her courage, commitment and efforts in her fight against drug counterfeiting which is a brutal, shameful and evil crime that stood as low as the crime of child prostitution! This evil crime causes unnecessary deaths, sadness, suffering to millions of people not only in Nigeria but other parts of the world too!
I read a most timely article, "Akunyili On Drug Counterfeiting" on October 14, 2007, Sunday Independent.
"The problem of counterfeit drugs and other regulated products is rapidly rearing its ugly head in developed countries and this is fuelled by purchase of drugs via the Internet. The negative impact of counterfeit drugs and other regulated products knows no boundaries. Resistant strains of micro-organisms do not need visa to travel from country to country." - Prof. Dora Akunyili
It was reported in this article that Prof. Dora Akunyili inspired Nigerians with these words: "Some of us complain about poor infrastructure facilities like inadequate power supply, water, etc, but Indians, Chinese and other nationals are all over Nigeria making it big, despite these challenges. If foreigners can make it despite the prevailing challenges, you too can."
I see great potential for transformation, growth and prosperity in Nigeria and Prof. Eghosa Osagie hit it on the nail when he touched on the importance of leadership in his book, The New Nigerian Economy - From Poverty to Prosperity, "... Concretely, there are two ways in which leadership can influence the national economy. First, political leadership through its policies and attitude of its individual members to private accumulation of wealth, has the power to develop or ruin an economy. Second, leadership in the various industries of the national economy, in particular, the banks and other financial institutions, the manufacturing industries, and commerce, has the choice of behaving as autonomous agents of national welfare and development."
I enjoyed my short visit and I believe that with good leadership, wise business strategies, co-operation from all sectors, good infrastructure plus foreign skills and investments, there's definitely lots of room for transformation, growth and prosperity for the economy of Nigeria. It is clearly evident to me that there are many Nigerians who are business-minded and are willing to learn and work hard to make life better for themselves and their country!

SIX IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF!
Six important questions to ask yourself if you want to get ahead in life! The first question is "Where Are You Now?" If you do not know where you are now, you will not know what to do because it is critical to know your position and situation before taking action!
I am sure you have experienced this many times, when you ask for direction from a friend over your phone, he will ask you "where are you now?" before he can give you direction to get to the place you want to go!
This question is basically to help you know yourself better. Socrates, the famous Greek philosopher and teacher always ask his students to "Know Thyself". There are eight areas in your life that you can check from 1 to 10. 1 being the worst state and 10 being the best state.
Do you know how much time, money and effort you've invested in your health? Do you know how much time, money and effort you have invested in your family? Do you know how much time, money and effort you have invested in your finance? Do you know how much time, effort and money you've invested in personal development?
How about moral obligation, social contribution, achieving your dreams and spiritual achievements? Do you know what state or condition you are in right now?
The next important question is "Where Do You Want To Go?" Because if you do not know where you want to go it doesn't matter which road you take! Clarity leads to power. Paul Meyer, the father of goals setting said it so well: "The reason you are not where you want to be today it is because your goals are not clearly defined."
Your mind is a goal seeking device and it needs a clear goal for it to work effectively.
The third question is "Why Do You Want To Get There?" What is the purpose, objective or burning desire to get there? This will be the driving force, it is not the how? It is the why?
Have you experienced success in the past? If you think over it, it was the why, the purpose or the burning desire that help you achieve it!
The fourth question is "How Are You going To Get There?" Do you know the way or do you know someone who can show you the way to get there? To be successful learn from those who are successful, who have been there and done that. You will move much faster when you have a mentor or coach to guide you and avoid the costly mistakes and painful experiences!
The fifth question is "How Are You Going To Spend The Rest Of Your Life?" Do you have a plan of action to live your dreams and retire comfortably doing what you love to do?
The sixth question is "What Legacy Do You Want To Leave Behind"
When the time comes for you to leave this world what do you want to be remembered for by your loved ones, relatives and friends, and how the things you've done will make a positive difference to people's lives?
Remember these six questions and you will be glad you did, because they can make a world of difference to the quality of your life!

THE 12 SECRETS TO SUCCESS!
1. There are no secrets, the formula for success is found in the good book: "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened!" You can find all the information you need to be successful from the library, book stores and Internet.
2. Personal development is the key to success and the Buddha made that clear with this statement: We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we create the world. Yes, you are what you think! You will attract what you think so be careful of what you are thinking about!
3. The truth shall set you free! Be true to yourself and others. Confucius said: "Sincerity is the highest mark of a man" Say what you mean and mean what you say and deliver what you promised!
4. Integrity is the foundation of everything. Buckminster Fuller said it so well: "Integrity is the essence of everything." Always ask yourself what is your motivation and intention? Will your thoughts, speech and actions hurt others or help others?
5. Live a balanced life with time for yourself and your loved ones because at the end of the day you got to ask yourself: "Are you happy and are your loved ones happy?" Do not chase after wealth at the expense of your health and time with your loved ones. Time and health is your most precious asset and wealth will come to you when you do the right things!
6. How well you communicate is how well you live. Clarity leads to power. Do you know what people want, and how to help them get what they want? Zig Ziglar said: "You can have everything you want in life if you will help enough people get what they want." 7. Find out what you are living for? And help people to find meaning in their lives. Many people committed suicide because they felt they had nothing to live for! Who are the people and what are the things that give you joy and meaning in life? When you leave this world, what would you like to be remembered for? Leave a legacy that will make a positive difference to people's lives and find things to appreciate that will make life meaningful for you. Never give up hope and even in your darkest hour, remember there will always be someone who love and care about you.

3. The truth shall set you free! Be true to yourself and others. Confucius said: "Sincerity is the highest mark of a man" Say what you mean and mean what you say and deliver what you promised!
4. Integrity is the foundation of everything. Buckminster Fuller said it so well: "Integrity is the essence of everything." Always ask yourself what is your motivation and intention? Will your thoughts, speech and actions hurt others or help others?
5. Live a balanced life with time for yourself and your loved ones because at the end of the day you got to ask yourself: "Are you happy and are your loved ones happy?" Do not chase after wealth at the expense of your health and time with your loved ones. Time and health is your most precious asset and wealth will come to you when you do the right things!
6. How well you communicate is how well you live. Clarity leads to power. Do you know what people want, and how to help them get what they want? Zig Ziglar said: "You can have everything you want in life if you will help enough people get what they want." Learn to persuade people to do positive things that make a positive difference to their lives and at the same time make the world a better place.
7. Find out what you are living for? And help people to find meaning in their lives. Many people committed suicide because they felt they had nothing to live for! Who are the people and what are the things that give you joy and meaning in life? When you leave this world, what would you like to be remembered for? Leave a legacy that will make a positive difference to people's lives and find things to appreciate that will make life meaningful for you. Never give up hope and even in your darkest hour, remember there will always be someone who love and care about you.
8. Six important questions to ask yourself. Where am I now? Where do I want to go? Who can help me get there? Why do I want to get there? When do I want to get there? Who do I want to take along with me on this journey?
9. To be successful, learn from those who are successful and do what the successful people are doing! Find a mentor or coach who has been there and done that to guide you. You don't have to reinvent the wheel, there are proven and tested system to help you achieve success!
10. Take responsibility for your results. Albert Einstein said: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result." For things to change, first you must change. "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the cause of it all?" Be grateful for the positive things you have in your life because the law of abundance is link to the law of gratitude. What you are grateful for will grow and make you rich and happy!
11. Work with universal laws, they work all the time and the mother of all universal laws, is the law of cause and effect, what you sow, you shall reap! The three doors to happiness or suffering are your thoughts, your speech and your actions! Think, say and do the right things!
12. Always think of how you can help others because when you help others you help yourself and similarly when you hurt others you hurt yourself. We live in an interdependent world and we are all connected in one way or another. Live a virtuous life and do not harm any living being because they are just like you too, seeking happiness.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ABOUT HOW SCAMS AND GET-RICH-QUICK SCHEMES OPERATE!
You have been warned!
I am concerned for those who are putting their hard earned savings into dubious schemes and money games that promise high returns or large sums of money for little effort! And it seems that many people have fallen for such scams and get-rick-quick schemes!
A common scam on the Internet is sending an email telling you a good story and promising to transfer to you millions of dollars if you are so kind to provide him your bank account number for the transfer!
And when you are gullible or greedy enough to respond, the next thing they will do is to ask you for a "small sum" of administration fee which can be a few thousands of dollars or more! And when you have given them a few thousand dollars, they will ask for more money! They understand the "power of greed" and when someone has bitten their bait, they will try to get as much out of him as possible!
Aren't you tired of the hype of making tons of money with little effort?
Aren't you tired of get-rich-quick schemes that claim they can pay you so much more than well established financial institutions?
Be careful of a very common con-artist strategy:
In their first year they will pay out generously to the first batch of people who participated in the get-rich-quick scheme to win their heart and confidence. The first batch of participants will become the company's best promoters!
In their second year will be "pay day" when the company rakes in millions of dollars!
In their third year the con artists will find a good reason to close the company so that they can grab the millions of dollars they have collected in their second year and run!!!
Do your due diligence and check these factors:
Does the management team has high integrity and credibility? Is the system proven and tested for at least five years? Is the compensation plan fair and balanced or look like a money game? Are there genuine products and services offered that will benefit others? What is the amount of paid-up capital of the company and who are the directors?
Usually these get-rich-quick schemes will discourage you from taking out your money and encourage you to put in more money!
They will make it difficult or have disincentives to discourage you from taking out your profits and offer you very attractive incentives to encourage you to invest more money!
Do your due diligence and if you think it is a scam, it is only wise to seek advice from a few successful people whom you respect for their wisdom and integrity. If all of them tell you they smell a rat, most probably it is a rat!
